Rachel Ward-Sale

I was born in Brighton in 1959 and studied Art, Design and Bookbinding at The University of Brighton from 1977 – 81 under John Plummer, Faith Shannon and David Sellars.

In 1980 I won First prize and Silver medal in the Designer Bookbinders National Competition and was subsequently elected as one of the first two Licentiate members of Designer Bookbinders. A young family severely restricted the time I could devote to such competitions but I re-entered in 2003 and 2004 winning first prizes for the open choice book in both years and the Mansfield Silver medal for the overall best book in the competition in 2004.

I was elected a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders in 2005

Since leaving college, I have been self-employed, initially working from home while my children were young. In 1992 I co-founded Bookbinders of Lewes where I do general binding, repairs and commissioned fine bindings.

In addition to my binding work I also teach bookbinding at my Lewes workshop and other establishments including West Dean College near Chichester.

Texture is a recurrent element in my work, which I enjoy exploring, often using found objects to print or impress leather and paper. I like the immediacy of these techniques and find the textures they create very tactile.
